Life Cycle

POETRY

by Liza Moore

In
winter
months
light detaches
from a hill,

slow
and full of silence,
where, dying,
lilies dissolve their golden leaves.

The world withdraws
for a time
knowing the cost of having been.
Bear and fox

in their closed spaces
welcome
what little practice received
for their final

descent.
We wait
outside all of this,
native tongues of the industrial tread,
afraid

to become
what we have feared.
Our hands feel the shape
of darkness

like a cropland
plowed
in the deep of summer,
roots run dry.

A barren faith in the things that have shaped us.
